Peabo Bryson has suffered a stroke, according to his rep.
The 75-year-old Grammy-award winning singer’s rep shared a statement about his health, noting he’s currently receiving treatment following his medical emergency.
“Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and balladeer, Peabo Bryson — the voice behind the Oscar-winning Disney songs ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘A Whole New World’ — has suffered a stroke and is currently under medical care,” the rep shared with Variety.
“At this time, the family requests privacy as they navigate this deeply personal moment together,” the rep continued. “The thoughts, prayers and love of friends and fans are welcomed and deeply appreciated.”
Peabo has had a storied career for decades, receiving his first Grammy nomination in 1992 for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male for his title track “Can You Stop the Rain,” from the album of the same name.
Prior to that, Peabo released 13 studio albums, with his first, self-titled Peabo, being released in 1976. He has also released collaboration albums with Natalie Cole and Roberta Flack.
In 1991, Peabo teamed with Celine Dion for the duet “Beauty and the Beast” from the Disney movie, which won several awards and nominations.
The track, was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar, but in 1993, it was nominated for two Grammys – Record of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals – winning the latter.
The following year, Peabo was nominated again for Grammys in the same categories for “A Whole New World” from Aladdin with Regina Belle. The duo picked up Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals!
